Social media for small business: How to find the time ?
When you’re a small business owner, finding time for social media isn’t always easy. Sure, you might find the time to scroll through your Facebook or LinkedIn newsfeed during your downtime, but putting in the hours to manage social media for small business successfully is another matter.
In this blog we’ve listed 5 ways that small business owners can find time for their social media. So, if you can spare 5 minutes, take a read.
Create a social media strategy, don’t just wing it
It’s crucial that you formulate a plan before diving headfirst into social media. Spend an hour or so deciding what you want to achieve and the type of people you wish to reach through your social media efforts.
Ask yourself the following questions:
- What is your objective? For many businesses, it will be one or more of the following: build brand awareness, gather leads, generate new business, build a fanbase. Once you’ve decided upon your goal, it will make your successes easy to measure going forward.
- Who do you want to reach? Come up with user personas, and think up a way to engage each of them. Remember that you might also want to reach influencers and other businesses as well as potential – and existing – customers.
- How do you plan on measuring your results? You might see an increase in business after you start marketing on social media, but these new customers won’t always tell you that they found you online. Use specific call-to-actions, or unique codes for your promotions, and set up metrics to monitor your results.
Use a scheduling tool
There are dozens of social media scheduling tools out there, and many of them offer a free basic service, which should suit small business owners perfectly.
At Digital Media Team, we use Buffer, as it is ideal for the large amount of clients that we handle. Buffer also has a brilliant month-view calendar, which makes it easy to lay out your posts for the coming weeks.
You can also install the handy Buffer extension to your browser, which allows you to schedule posts without visiting your Buffer dashboard. It couldn’t be simpler!
Devoting some time to sit and schedule your posts for the coming week is far more efficient than posting on the go – it’s inevitable that at some point social media will slip your mind and before you know it you’ve gone a week without posting. Your social media presence should be consistent, not patchy.
Add social media interaction into your routine
In addition to setting aside time to schedule your content, you should also get accustomed to replying to any interaction that takes place across your platforms. It can be distracting to keep notifications on, especially if your social media efforts are really taking off, so turning them off and setting aside 10 minutes or so at the end of each day could help if you’re rushed off your feet.
Remember, you should respond to all actions that take place on your page. Whether this is a comment, review, direct message or simply a mention, it shows great customer service to jump on and add a reply. Even negative comments and be diffused if you show quality customer service.
Make use of dead time
No matter how busy you are, you’re bound to have some down time that you could put to better use – even if it is just a spare 15 minutes. We often spend a lot of our time waiting, for example whilst commuting via train or plane, sat in doctor’s offices or even just standing in queues.
If you stay connected through your laptop or phone, you can make use of this time to engage with your audience on social media, share a useful post or even update your audience on where you are, if it’s relevant.
It’s all about making the most of what little free time you have, and making your routine work for you.
