2018’s best social media moments
In the year that saw drones shut down Gatwick airport, and car manufacturer Tesla launch one of its cars into space to the sound of David Bowie, it’s no surprise social media has been full of memorable moments.
It’s arguably been one of the craziest years in history – I don’t think anyone was expecting to see Ed Balls wrestling in a leotard on TV – so here at DMT, we picked our best and favourite top seven moments from across the social universe.
Let’s be real. The best part of Eurovision is the countless memes and tweets that come out of the European singing
6. The Royal Wedding
The whole world was glued to their screens back in May when we watched Suits actress Meghan Markle and everyone’s favourite royal, Prince Harry, tie the knot. With guests from the Royal Family mingling with celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey and David Beckham, the event was a star-studded affair with many moments not to be missed; let’s not forget Bishop Michael Curry’s speech! It’s no surprise that it didn’t take long for Social Media to weigh in on some of the wedding’s most memorable moments.
5. I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here!
This series of the beloved jungle reality show has definitely been one of the best in years, with pretty much every celebrity in camp getting along. Harry Redknapp was crowned the winner after capturing the nation’s hearts with his love of jam rolly polly, and of course, let’s not forget his ‘peng ting called Sandra.‘ Social Media went crazy from the first few episodes and continued throughout the three-week broadcast with memes, tweets and reactions. Safe to say, the whole of the UK never wanted the show to end.
4. Memes Galore
Memes are hardly a new concept in 2018, and you could even argue they have become a part of our culture. The standard of this year’s memes were very high, with so many creative and funny ones being made and circulated across social media. Here’s a few of the our personal favourites…
3. Love Island
This Summer saw over 30 sexy singletons enter a luxury villa in Spain to battle it out to win £50,000. It’s the absolute top-end of trashy TV and millions switched on to watch these gorgeous people fight, have sex, break-up, make-up and lie by the pool for two months. They may not be your type on paper, but the Internet turned into a Love Island frenzy. Here are a few of our favourite reactions…
Whether you voted to leave or remain back in 2016, at least we can all now agree that Brexit is currently an utter shambles. It’s been a turbulent year in British politics in general, but Brexit has to be commended at least for being the source of some brilliant memes and social media reactions. The whole nation was reduced to either laughing or cringing at Theresa May’s attempt at dancing, and choruses of ‘who is Jacob Rees-Mogg’ have been echoed across social platforms. Brexit has been the centre of news for the entire year, and the only reason it’s number two on our list, is that the whole of the UK is sick of seeing it all over our newsfeeds every morning.
1. The World Cup
Summer of 2018 was glorious – a record long heatwave, Love Island back on our screens and, yes, the World Cup returned with one of the greatest displays of football! And it was a crazy one with so many social media users r
