2020 In Numbers: Marketing Edition

Thank GOODNESS 2020 is over. If you ask our resident astrological guru, Ruby, she’ll tell you it’s only gonna get (sort of) better from here. According to the star-sign specialist, 2020 was always going to be a bad year. Going forward it’s apparently going to be more of a half and half year in 2021- equal parts good and bad. Whereas 2022 is going to be nothing but good! We can only hope so. And we’re holding her to that promise.

So we thought it would be a good time to take a look back at what could easily be dubbed the most ridiculous year in marketing history. The good, the bad, and the downright insane marketing numbers from 2020.

We gained 12 new team members!

Humblebrag but, uh… we have absolutely killed it during 2020. We welcomed 12 new faces to the dmt family and there are more to come in 2021.

As of Q1 2020, Facebook said that there are 2.6 billion monthly active users.

That’s a bit mental when you think about it. There are 7.6 billion people in the world and 2.6 billion are on the same app, every day.

Instagram is the social channel with the second-highest ROI among marketers.

According to Hubspot’s ‘Not Another State of Marketing Report’ for 2020 they reported that the social media giant was raking in the moolah almost as much as Facebook.

Soon to be EX-President of The United States, Donald Trump, sent his 59,553rd and final tweet.

His final goodbye to the bird app was: “To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th.”

Roughly 80% of marketers have reported an increase in email engagement.

Over the last twelve months, the stats have been going up! This could be down to a lot of things: good marketing, the pandemic, or better trends. Either way, it’s a good time to invest more time into this form of marketing.

Google Ads found a company saw an uptick of 48% in brand awareness alone.

An American company, Shmidt Naturals, found that over the course of 2020 their brand gained more recognition on YouTube because of its vegan products. Case and point if you’re wondering if brand awareness campaigns are ‘worth it’ when it comes to 2020 marketing campaigns.

A huge 54% of consumers said they wanted to see more video content.

People pay attention to video content from companies they value, whereas they skim or multitask written content and podcasts. With this in mind, video ad spending is expected to show an annual growth rate between 2020 and 2024 of 4.9%!

Over 39% of smartphone users are more likely to shop through an app.

The investigation was held by Think and Google and they narrowed it down to the fact that the brand’s mobile app is easier and faster when making purchases.

We learned there are an estimated 11 species of fish that can walk on land.

In a bizarre study done by the National Science Foundation of America in Florida where they found out the information from doing CT scans. As well as looking at a new evolutionary map of the hillstream loach family. Including the only fish species caught in the act of walking: a rare, blind cavefish known as a Cryptotora thamicola, or the cave angelfish for us simple folk. We know this has nothing to do with marketing, but it’s cool, right?
