It’s that time of year again! Whether you refuse to partake in anything Christmassy until the 24th of December, or you’re an ‘it’s November 1st, get the tinsel out’ kinda person, there’s no escaping the festive season. Especially in the world of digital marketing.

As Christmas adverts from brands begin their annual rollout, we’ve picked out our favourites so far!

Let the battle of the Christmas adverts commence…

Asda

Asda kicked off the festive season with a nostalgic throwback. Featuring Buddy the Elf from the 2003 festive classic, the brand-new 90-second advert uses footage and iconic lines straight from the film.

Set in an Asda store (of course), to the tune of ‘Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town’, the advert follows Buddy’s first (and most-probably final) chaotic shift at Asda during the holiday season. With the tagline ‘Have your Elf a Merry Christmas’, it’s a funny take on one of everyone’s favourite Christmas films!

John Lewis

It’s a widely accepted fact; the John Lewis advert marks the start of the Christmas season. Without fail, it becomes a viral moment each year, making even the thickest of skins shed a tear (or three). This year is no exception. For over a decade, millions of people have flocked to see what the renowned retailer makes.

This year, their advert was arguably one of their sweetest yet. Entitled ‘The Beginner’, it tells the tale of a man eager to learn how to skateboard, driving his body to the point of destruction, from bruises to sprained wrists. Towards the end of the ad, it’s revealed that he’s simply trying to find common ground with the child he’s adopting, to make her feel more comfortable.

Towards the end of the advert, it states that over 108,000 children in the UK are in the care system and announces its commitment to supporting the futures of young people in care. It’s a solid 10/10 for wholesomeness.

M&S

Next up, we’ve got good ol’ Marks & Sparks, securing their spot yet again with one of the best supermarket Christmas ads of the season. Featuring Dawn French as non-other than a Christmas Fairy, the advert sees a whole host of Christmas decorations coming to life. As well as a brand new character, Duckie, voiced by Jennifer Saunders!

Sainsbury’s

All hailing the new queen of Christmas (and the Queen of just about everything), Alison Hammond stars in Sainsbury’s new festive advert titled ‘Once Upon A Pud’. Celebrating their very own Taste the Difference Range, Alison, aka ‘The Countess’, is in charge of choosing the menu for the all-important Christmas feast.

After objecting to the always controversial Christmas Pudding, Alison tries Sainsbury’s newest creation, a Caramelised Biscuit Christmas Pudding and has a complete U-turn on opinion. Anything with Alison Hammond is a winner in our opinion!

Lidl

Lidl is back at it again with another hit advert. The advert centres around ‘Lidl Bear’, who becomes an unlikely celebrity. After accidentally shrinking a jumper, the family place it onto their daughter's teddy bear before realising they’ve created the Lidl Bear Christmas character.

After letting the fame get to his head, the bear sees his owner's Christmas wish to have him back home! Very funny and very original, it’s a strong concept and just about trumps their rival Aldi!

Tesco

Featuring the slogan ‘Stand For Joy’, Tesco’s 2022 Christmas advert takes a tongue-in-cheek approach to the current political climate. Posing as The Christmas Party, Tesco pledge to bring more joy due to a nationwide ‘joy shortage’.

As part of their pledge, Tesco vows to bring more pigs-in-blankets, more hats on dogs, and more for your money, of course. Sounds like a dream. They’d definitely get our vote!
