8 Animal Instagram Accounts You Need To Know About

Here at dmt, we consider ourselves to be pet account stans. Animal content? We’re all over it. Because, after all, pets really are the gifts that keep on giving.

But it’s not all just cute pictures of puppies doing silly things; it’s actually become a whole marketing opportunity. Dubbed the ‘Instagram Zoo’ by Forbes, it’s not out of the ordinary for our furry influencers to outperform their human counterparts. Pet influencers such as Hamlet the Pig and Pumpkin the Racoon have reported earning up to £2000+ for a sponsored Instagram post alone!

As an ode to the pets we love so much, we’ve picked out the top animal Instagram accounts you should definitely be watching.

Dolly Pawton - 187k Followers

Ladies and gentlemen… Her. Dolly Pawton is a chihuahua by nature but a self-professed LGBTQIA+ ally and activist by heart. And while we’ve been sat at home, doing nish, she’s been out, making moves.

Having been featured in Vogue, she’s seen as the Bella Hadid amongst her canine peers. Working with notable brands such as e.l.f, Starbucks and Jeep; when she’s not bogged down with making #content she’s even made appearances at London Pride.

Tuna Melts My Heart - 2 Million Followers

Tuna is a chihuahua dachshund and a notable internet celebrity. Famed for his big overbite but even bigger heart, Tuna has gone viral time and time again because of his awkward (but completely loveable) face - he even has his own Cameo page!

With over 2 million followers and counting, we wish him nothing but success with his content endeavours. Tuna, you’re doing amazing, sweetie.

Ducks in Space - 1 Million Followers

Ducks in Space pays homage to not one pet duck, but hundreds of ducks. It’s your one-stop destination for ducks doing nothing and everything. Raking up a total of 1 million followers, it’s become an account to watch.

And if following their account isn’t enough to satisfy your duck content needs, they even have their very own merch!

Lilo & Lionel the Hedgehogs - 145k Followers

Lilo and Lionel the Hedgehogs are spikey, sweet and stylish. Whoever said that hedgehogs don’t make for good pets couldn’t be more wrong. After being awarded a Shorty Award (an award that celebrates the best of digital and social media), their Instagram account skyrocketed.

Lilo and Lionel’s owner Anna has vastly become the Kris Jenner of hedgehogs. Charging an average of $2000 per sponsored post, as well as having her own merch page, she’s monetised from a unique space in the market.

Not only do Lilo and Lionel churn out good content like there’s no tomorrow, if they were to drop a skincare line and a Hulu show next week, we wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest.

Doug the Pug - 3.6 Million Followers

Doug the Pug is a worldwide superstar. Anyone who’s anyone has brushed shoulders with him, and he’s single-handedly achieved more in his life so far than most of us ever will.

With two people’s choice awards under his belt, he’s got a roster of celebrity friends including; Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato and Billie Eilish to name a few. Not only that, he’s gained the attention of notable fashion houses such as Versace, who have dressed him for his red-carpet appearances and appeared in music videos for artists such as Katy Perry and Fall Out Boy.

Whitney Chewston - 202k Followers

Whitney Chewston the dachshund, is the diva of dogs everywhere. She’s constantly booked and busy. Starting out, Whitney Chewston became a viral meme and has since gained a significant following on social media. Her ‘selfies’ have had her gain attention from celebrities such as Lil Nas X and gained her brand ambassador and internet celebrity status.

Jil the Squirrel - 689k Followers

Spotlighting a more unconventional animal, Jill the Squirrel has become a notable ‘pet of Instagram’. As a 10-year-old rescue, Jill’s owners describe her as a parkour expert who loves Starbucks napkins and HATES vacuum cleaners.

As a devout vegetarian, Jill has gained over 689 thousand followers on Instagram and counting. She’s worked with notable brands such as Henry’s Pets and Pop Your Pup and also has her own merch consisting of hoodies, tees and sweatshirts, all branded with her fan art.

Tartar Sauce, a.k.a Grumpy Cat - 2.6 Million Followers

Tartar Sauce walked so that her successors could run. As the OG IT girl of Petstagrams, she became informally known as ‘Grumpy Cat’ back in her heyday of 2012.

After her photo went viral on Reddit, many people to this day consider her the pioneer of pet celebrities. Although she sadly passed away in 2019, her Instagram account is still very much active, and we’ve deemed Tartar Sauce an honourable mention because of her contribution to meme culture and beyond.
